The learning bicycle

Stuart Adams, BAppSc GradCertCarEdDev MSc MTeach

The course that a child travels throughout their schooling years is reminiscent of a cycling competition in some ways. Likewise, the learning components of a child’s mind can be compared to the way a bicycle functions. You have two wheels, which although play a different role, are equally important in their own way.

The front wheel guides the direction the rider travels in. The guiding wheel represents the cognitive or ‘thinking’ part of the brain. The clearer the surroundings, the more precise the rider can guide the direction of the front wheel. When the learner can make crystal clear sense out of what is being communicated before them, they are much better equipped to guide their understanding in the right direction. Poor communication and teaching style however creates a thick blanket of mental fog around the learner’s path, making it difficult to navigate and much easier to fall off the track. Once the rider veers too far off course, it becomes much harder to make up lost ground.

The rear wheel however, despite often forgotten about, is just as important as this is the wheel that drives the rider forward. The driving wheel represents the emotional or ‘feeling’ part of the brain. An engaged learner that feels confident and motivated, rides a lot stronger. The driving wheel is less likely to be focused on, as it sits underneath the rider, not out front in their plain view of sight like the front wheel is. The driving wheel however makes all the difference in a race. In a competitive word dependant on efficient education, a good teacher is like a stronger pair of legs that drive those pedals forward with a lot more power. A positive learning environment helps lower the decline, whilst an unmotivated learner has to pedal uphill. A deflated self-esteem punctures the rider’s tyre, slowing learning to a standstill.

The thing to remember is that both wheels are connected, and therefore work together. If one is neglected, the other becomes impaired. Therefore, efficient learning requires both:

a)      A focus on clear conceptual communication to guide the students understanding without getting lost in confusion or distraction. (See sections below under the heading "Cognition: How we think affects what we learn.)

b)      A powerful driving force that builds confidence and motivation without slowing the learner’s efficiency by creating emotional uphill struggles.(See sections below under the heading: Emotion: What we feel affects how we learn). Also relevant is the article: The Emotional Impact on Learning.
