The future role of education

Stuart Adams, BAppSc GradCertCarEdDev MSc MTeach

“If you look at the economy now it is really only providing opportunities to people with an education.” Bill Gates

Over the years we’ve seen a lot of changes in trends. Both couples must work longer hours to make ends meet, and don’t have the time to look after a large garden like our parents could. As a result, we are seeing a shift towards preferring smaller, low maintenance yards. With an increasing population, we’re having to use what land we have more efficiently, meaning smaller properties with 2 story houses – again, trying to make more out of what we have available to us. Depleting oil reserves has seen ever increasing fuel prices, resulting in a shift towards more fuel efficient cars. An increase in immigration and globalisation has seen many jobs go overseas to countries where they can do more work for less money. The remaining jobs have become more competitive, meaning organisations favour workers who can get maximum results with the time, money and resources available to them. We are heading towards a future, bottle necked in shape. The concept of efficiency – the ability to do more with less, is the concept of the future.

Our ever increasingly competitive world has also created a future for our children, whereby the quality of their education now will make more of an impact on their life down the track than the measly effect that fuel prices and interest rates will ever have on us at this point in history. The days where you could still make an easy living without good schooling are slowly fading away.  The lucky country our parents enjoyed was like an oasis to the rest of the world. Now with increased immigration, population density and globalisation – those of us in the lucky country can’t depend on luck any more. Even now, university places are becoming more competitive, making our children’s school years more crucial than what they were for us, and far more crucial than what they were for our parents. The size of the hurdles our children will have to jump over later in life will become more and more dependent on the education they are getting right now.

You can always change the engine in your car, or even just change your car. You can’t take your child back to the cabbage patch and exchange it for a more efficient model however, nor can you open up their head and replace it with a more efficient brain. You can get your children to spend extra time after school studying, however there are only so many hours in the day – and to grow up emotionally healthy, children still need plenty of time to enjoy their childhood. The concept of efficiency now becomes the crucially important determining factor in education too. How much your child learns in the amount of time they have available to them will make all the difference.

Imagine you were stuck with the car you had. You can’t change the engine but you can make sure it is tuned and serviced correctly, and most of all can make sure it runs on the most efficient fuel. So how do we fine tune our children’s education and make sure they’re being filled with the most efficient learning fuel?

At Top of the Class Professional Tuition, learning efficiency is our number one goal. We aim to make your child a more efficient learner by focusing on both the cognitive (thinking) as well as emotional (feeling) aspects of learning.  The emotional aspects of learning are discussed and explained here.

The cognitive aspects of learning we focus our approach on include:

  • Tailoring teaching methods according to your child’s Learning Style: Everybody learns differently, and one of the most important strategies for improving learning efficiency is to ensure that the way a child is being taught fits best with their strongest ‘intelligences’. Know More…
  • Applying a Constructivist Framework. Understanding something happens much faster if the way in which it is communicated is done by linking new information with that already understood. Know More…
  • Higher Order Thinking Skills: Being able to understand something in great depth and learn autonomously requires strengthening the Higher Order Thinking Skills such as Analysing, Evaluating and Creating.  Higher Order Thinkers learn faster and understand more of what they learn. Know More…
  • IT, Literacy and Assessment Skills: IT skills are essential to play a role in the future world’s work force. Exam and Assignment Skills are important to ensure that assessment marks reflect true potential, whilst Literacy Skills are imperative to communicate information accurately and understand what is being communicated.
