multiple intelligences

Some children learn best by using 'hands-on' models and practical approaches referred to as 'kinesthetic' learning.

Some children learn best by using visual resources such as pictures and diagrams.

maths tuition

Some children learn best by using logic, formulas or numerical concepts.

what is your childs learning style?

This article explains the importance of Multiple Intelligences, and the importance of adapting teaching methods according to the students learning styles. This is one of the key learning atributes your tutor will focus on with your childs tuition.

“If we all had exactly the same kind of mind and there was only the one kind of intelligence, then we could teach everybody the same thing and that would be fair. Once we realise that people have very different kinds of minds and different kinds of strengths, we realise that an education that treats everyone the same way is actually the most unfair. Everything can be taught in more than one way, and anything that is understood can be shown in more than one way.”

Howard Gardener, Professor of Cognition and Education: Harvard University

Why is it that our children excel in some areas, yet struggle with others?

When the ‘teaching style' does not match a student’s ‘learning style’ it can be like trying to communicate in a foreign language. When the teaching style is translated according to our strongest ‘intelligences’ however, we can make much easier sense out of information we previously struggled to comprehend. This means that your son or daughter may have far more potential than they are demonstrating if their learning style is not accommodated for in the classroom.

Translating our children’s learning language: What are your childs Strongest Intelligences?

We all learn using a combination of ‘intelligences’. Some people are better with Logical Reasoning and Identifying Sequential or Numerical Patterns. Some people learn better by reading, some through listening. Many people learn well visually (through pictures or diagrams) whereas others can make better sense by doing something practical or ‘hands-on’ (kinaesthetic). The order of strength we apply those intelligences determines our learning style. We develop our weaker intelligences better with experience; however our children’s understanding is much more dependent on their individual learning styles being catered to. This is done far more effectively in a one-on-one environment.

Which intelligences does your child use to learn most effectively.

Adapting our approach to best suit your child’s individual circumstances is what we’re all about! Modifying their teaching methods according to your child’s learning style is one of the most fundamental strategies your Tutor will apply to overcome your son or daughters learning barriers. Whether it’s Maths, English or any other school related topic; once your child finds it easier to understand they will gain new confidence and an improved attitude towards that topic. When the way they think about, feel towards and understand the subject improves, their grades and academic success is sure to follow.

theory of multiple intelligences

One of the most cruicial elements of our tutoring philosophy is that both the cognitive (thinking) and emotional (feeling) parts of a students mind must be nurtured and guided for efficient learning to be reflected by outstanding achievement. To understand more about our other areas of learning we focus on, please refer to the short articles below:

Understanding Learning Styles Using strengths to overcome weakness
Constructivist Communication Using personal relevance to make learning fun
Higher Order Thinking Building confidence to drive motivation

Higher Order Thinking: The difference between basic understanding and expertise.

Your tutor will progresively and strategically deepen your childs understanding of subject material by developing their Higher Order Thinking Skills.

A childs understanding is determined by their teachers communication.

Your tutor will apply constructivist teaching methods to build new knowledge step by step so that your child makes sense of new information with ease.
