NAPLAN Tutors Australia
Targeted NAPLAN preparation for students in Years 3, 5, 7, and 9 — reading, writing, language conventions, and numeracy. Build confidence and skills before the March testing window.
What NAPLAN Is and Why Preparation Matters
NAPLAN — the National Assessment Program: Literacy and Numeracy — is the annual standardised assessment for all Australian students in Years 3, 5, 7, and 9. It tests reading, writing, language conventions (spelling, grammar, and punctuation), and numeracy. The testing window takes place in March each year — early in the school year, which means preparation needs to start well before the summer holidays.
NAPLAN results are used as benchmarks by parents, schools, and education authorities. For many families, they matter beyond just the assessment itself: strong NAPLAN results are used as part of the application process for selective high schools, opportunity class (OC) placement, and academic streams at secondary level.
A NAPLAN tutor doesn't try to teach children to 'game' the test — they identify genuine gaps in literacy and numeracy skills and address them. This builds real capability that serves students not just in the NAPLAN assessment, but throughout their schooling.
Reading Comprehension
Targeted work on inference, vocabulary in context, and understanding different text types — all key NAPLAN reading skills.
Writing
Persuasive and narrative writing techniques, sentence structure, and the specific conventions assessed in NAPLAN writing tasks.
Numeracy
Problem-solving across number, algebra, measurement, geometry, and statistics — with and without calculator (Years 7 and 9).
Language Conventions
Spelling, punctuation, and grammar — the language conventions section is where targeted practice delivers quick improvements.
NAPLAN Preparation by Year Level
Each NAPLAN year level has its own specific expectations.
Year 3: First NAPLAN experience. Focus on reducing test anxiety, familiarising children with the format, and strengthening foundational literacy (phonics, simple sentence construction) and numeracy (counting, basic operations, simple geometry) skills. Many Year 3 students benefit enormously from just understanding what to expect.
Year 5: Expectations increase significantly. Reading tasks require inference and analysis. Writing must demonstrate clear structure and sophistication. Numeracy extends to fractions, decimals, and more complex problem-solving. Preparation focuses on bridging the gap from Year 3 level.
Year 7: Students sit NAPLAN for the first time as high school students. The jump in difficulty from Year 5 is substantial. Reading tasks require deep comprehension and analytical response. Writing must be highly structured. Numeracy includes algebraic thinking and statistical analysis. The Year 7 assessment is also important as a baseline for the senior years.
Year 9: The final NAPLAN assessment, taken in the middle of high school. For many students, Year 9 NAPLAN is relevant to academic streaming decisions. Numeracy in Year 9 includes scientific calculators for some components. Writing must demonstrate sophisticated argumentation and structural control.

NAPLAN and Selective School Preparation
For families with children aiming for selective high schools or opportunity class (OC) placement in NSW, NAPLAN preparation and selective school preparation often go hand in hand — they test overlapping literacy and numeracy skills. Our NAPLAN tutors understand both assessments and can design preparation programs that serve both goals.
Selective school tests typically include additional components (verbal reasoning, abstract reasoning) that go beyond NAPLAN — but strong NAPLAN skills provide the foundation. Similarly, in Victoria, Queensland, and other states, NAPLAN results can influence academic stream placement at secondary level.
A NAPLAN tutor who understands this broader context can help families prepare their children not just for the March assessment, but for the educational pathways that flow from it.
Year 3 Focus
Test familiarisation, foundation literacy and numeracy, building confidence for first NAPLAN experience.
Year 5 Focus
Bridging from Year 3, inference and analysis, extended writing, complex numeracy problem-solving.
Year 7 Focus
High school standard, analytical writing, algebraic numeracy, academic streaming relevance.
Year 9 Focus
Final NAPLAN, sophisticated writing, calculator numeracy, selective school and stream context.

“We started NAPLAN prep eight weeks before the test. Our son went from well below average in numeracy to above average — more than we could have hoped for.”
