French Tutors Australia
Expert French tutoring for the Australian school curriculum — Years 7 to 12, HSC and VCE French — plus DELF and DALF preparation for all ages.
Why French Tutoring Makes a Real Difference
French is one of the most widely studied second languages in Australian schools, and for good reason — it's the official language of 29 countries, spoken by 300 million people worldwide, and opens doors to careers in diplomacy, international business, tourism, and academia.
But French is also notoriously difficult for English speakers: gendered nouns, complex verb conjugations, silent letters, and the gap between written and spoken French all present real challenges. Classroom instruction — with 25 or more students — rarely provides enough individual practice time for pronunciation, conversation fluency, or detailed grammar correction.
A private French tutor changes this completely. They can diagnose exactly where your child is struggling, focus on the specific components of the HSC or VCE assessment, provide the conversation practice that builds real fluency, and help students access the DELF qualification that can boost their French credentials beyond the school certificate.
Speaking & Pronunciation
One-on-one conversation practice with immediate feedback — the single most effective way to build fluency.
Grammar & Writing
Targeted work on French grammar structures, essay writing, and the formal register required for senior assessments.
DELF / DALF Preparation
Structured preparation for DELF Prim, DELF Junior, and DALF — official qualifications from the French Ministry of Education.
Curriculum Alignment
Our tutors follow the Australian Curriculum for Languages — French, as well as state-specific study designs for VCE, HSC, and ATAR.
French in Australian Schools — Year 7 to Year 12
The Australian Curriculum for French runs from Foundation to Year 10, with Year 7 being the most common entry point for secondary students.
In Years 7–8, students learn basic conversational French, develop pronunciation, and begin understanding fundamental grammar including gendered nouns, basic verb conjugations (être, avoir, regular -er verbs), and simple sentence structure.
In Years 9–10, grammar becomes more complex — subjunctive mood, compound tenses, and more sophisticated reading and writing tasks. Cultural awareness is increasingly integrated.
In Years 11–12, students studying HSC French (NSW), VCE French (Victoria), or ATAR French (WA) are assessed on all four skills: listening, reading, writing, and speaking. The standards required are high — written responses must be accurate and idiomatic, oral tasks require confident, spontaneous expression. A private French tutor helps bridge the gap between classroom teaching and the fluency and accuracy these senior assessments demand.

DELF and DALF — French Qualifications Beyond School
The DELF (Diplôme d'études en langue française) and DALF (Diplôme approfondi de langue française) are official French language qualifications issued by the French Ministry of National Education. They are internationally recognised and valid for life — unlike school results, they don't expire.
DELF Prim is designed for primary school children (A1.1 to A2). DELF Junior (A1–B2) is designed for teenagers and maps closely to Australian school curriculum levels. DELF B2 is broadly equivalent to the level expected at the end of Year 12. DALF C1 and C2 are required for university study in France and for professional contexts.
Many Australian students sit DELF Junior as a complementary qualification alongside their HSC or VCE French — providing recognised evidence of proficiency beyond their school results.
DELF Prim
A1.1–A2. For primary students. Listening and speaking focus. Confidence-building first international qualification.
DELF Junior A1–B1
Elementary to intermediate. Most Year 7–10 students target A1–B1 levels based on years of study.
DELF Junior B2
Upper intermediate. Broadly equivalent to Year 12 curriculum outcomes. Highly respected by universities.
DALF C1–C2
Advanced and mastery. Required for university study in France and professional French contexts.

“Finding a French tutor who understood both the VCE curriculum and could also prepare my son for his DELF exam seemed impossible. Top of the Class found someone who did both — and my son's French has genuinely transformed.”

Parent of Year 11 student, Melbourne
